01The station trap: three "Suzhou" stations
Suzhou station sits beside the old town, with metro Lines 2 and 4 underneath — about 25–35 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao by bullet train. Two other stations can sneak into search results: Suzhou Yuanqu (苏州园区站), in the lakeside business district east of town, and Suzhou North (苏州北), in the far north. Same city, very different landing spots.
Coming from Shanghai: Shanghai Hongqiao → Suzhou station, about 25–35 minutes (fastest 25), second class ¥28–46. On a typical weekday roughly 60 trains run from 06:12 to 21:42 — one every 10–30 minutes, so you can practically show up and board.
Watch out: many Hongqiao trains stop at Suzhou Yuanqu station minutes before Suzhou station, and booking apps list both for the same train. Heading to the old town, pick the arrival that says plain Suzhou — and stay on board past the earlier stop.
02Metro: the one line you'll actually use
Suzhou's metro is clean, signed in English, and cheap. The line that matters for visitors is Line 4, which runs through the old town from Suzhou station down to Tongli station — the gateway to the Tongli water town.
| From Suzhou station (Line 4) | Stops | What's there |
|---|---|---|
| Beisita (北寺塔) | 1 stop | Walk ~600 m to the Humble Administrator's Garden & Suzhou Museum |
| Chayuanchang (察院场) | 2 stops | Guanqian Street — old shops, street food |
| Tongli (同里) | ~50 min | Metro ends at Tongli station — the old town is then a 10–15 min shuttle (725 bus or the T1 line) from there |
- Paying: scan Alipay's transit QR at the gate — no ticket machine, no card needed. If the transit QR won't open for your foreign card, the Su'e Xing (苏e行) app is the fallback. (Foreign-card path being re-verified, Sep 2026.) Alipay setup.
- Fare: a couple of yuan per ride; even the full run to Tongli stays cheap.
- Hours: roughly 5:40 first train to 23:30 last — times vary by line and station, but they cover any plan you'll have.
03Other stops worth knowing
- Shantang Street (山塘街): Line 2, one stop from Suzhou station. Lanterns along the canal — best after dark.
- Tiger Hill (虎丘): Line 4 one stop north to Sujin (苏锦), transfer to Line 6, get off at Huqiu station — about a 400 m walk to the south gate.
- Lingering Garden (留园): Line 2 to Shilu (石路) station, then a 10-minute walk — or a 5-minute taxi from the station.
- Line 6's Zhuo Zheng Yuan / Suzhou Museum station: a newer option with a direct exit at the garden — transfer to Line 6 at Sujin (苏锦) if you're coming from Suzhou station.
04Walking is a feature
The old town is small and flat. Garden → museum → Pingjiang Road → Shantang: all walkable, and the walking is where the city happens. Taxis and DiDi exist and work (Alipay covers DiDi), but on the core route you won't need either.
From Suzhou station, use the baggage-check-free passage (Gate 3, 6:30–22:00) into the metro — you skip a second security screening. Small detail, saves ten minutes, feels great.
